Why an EML File Does Not Open When You Double-Click It
An .eml file is one saved email. You usually get one when someone sends you a message "as an attachment", when you download a message from webmail, or when a colleague exports evidence for HR, a dispute or an audit. The trouble starts when you double-click it:
- Windows may ask "How do you want to open this file?" because no mail app is set as the default for .eml.
- The file opens in Notepad or a code editor and shows hundreds of lines of headers and encoded text.
- An Android phone may say it cannot open the file type.
The email is usually fine. An .eml is plain text in the standard email message format, with MIME encoding for the HTML body and attachments. A text editor shows that encoding as raw text. A real EML file viewer decodes it. For example, a subject line saved in the file as Subject: =?UTF-8?B?UmVjaG51bmcgTcOkcnogMjAyNQ==?= is displayed by the viewer as Rechnung März 2025. Quoted-printable text such as Caf=C3=A9 opens at 9=20am is shown as "Café opens at 9 am".
What the EML File Viewer Accepts
.eml is the standard format that most mail programs can save. .msg comes mainly from Outlook on Windows. The viewer reads both, so you do not need to check which one you have. If you mainly need Outlook files as documents, see MSG to PDF.
| File type | What it is | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| .eml | One email as MIME text | Saved or downloaded from webmail or a desktop mail app, or an email forwarded as an attachment |
| .msg | One email in Outlook's own binary format | A message saved from Outlook |
- How many. One or several files, dropped together. There is no limit on the free plan.
- How big. Files of any normal size. Files of tens of megabytes, usually because of large attachments, are slow to open on phones. Attachments are stored base64-encoded, which makes them about a third larger inside the .eml than on disk. A 15 MB PDF attachment therefore makes an .eml of roughly 20 MB.
- Unencrypted mail only. S/MIME encrypted messages, which often arrive as
smime.p7m, cannot be opened.
How to Open an EML File in the Browser Viewer
- Drag one or more .eml or .msg files onto the drop area, or click Choose files.
- Select an email in the list. The header block shows From, To, Cc, Date and Subject.
- Read the body below the header. HTML is sanitized before it is shown, and inline images embedded in the email are displayed.
- If the email has pictures stored on the sender's server, you will see a notice that remote images are blocked. Click the button to load them only if you trust the sender.
- Scroll to the attachment list to see each attachment and its size.
- To keep a copy, export the email to PDF.
The email is read by code running in your browser tab. It is not uploaded to a server.
What You Can Do After Viewing the Email
- Read it without a mail account. This helps on a shared PC, a work laptop without Outlook, or a phone.
- Check the header facts. The Date header includes the sender's time-zone offset, for example
Tue, 4 Mar 2025 09:12:44 +0100. You can also check whether "From" is the address you expected and who was copied. - Check attachments before you act. The size list shows whether that "invoice" is a 40 KB PDF or something unexpected, before you open anything.
- Avoid triggering tracking. Remote images stay blocked until you choose to load them. Opening a newsletter or a suspicious message in the viewer does not tell the sender's tracking pixel that you read it.
- Save it as a document. Export produces a PDF with selectable text and the header block at the top. This is useful for records, printing or attaching to a case file. The EML to PDF converter is the page for that task. The free plan makes one PDF per email, as many as you like. The paid one-time purchase ($9.90) downloads all emails as a ZIP of PDFs, merges them into one PDF sorted by date, and downloads all attachments together as a ZIP.
When the EML Viewer Works Poorly
- Chinese, Japanese and Korean text may not render fully in the exported PDF yet. Check the PDF before you rely on it.
- Heavily designed marketing emails will not look identical to how they appear in a mail client. Sanitizing removes some layout code, and blocked remote images leave gaps until you load them.
- S/MIME encrypted mail cannot be opened at all. You need the recipient's private key in a mail client that supports S/MIME.
- Very large files of tens of megabytes are slow on phones and can make the tab unresponsive. Use a computer for these.
- Free has no email limit, but PDFs are saved one at a time. For a folder of 50 messages, the paid plan saves them all in one click.
- It is a viewer, not a mail client. You cannot reply, forward or move the email into a mailbox from here.
Other Ways to Open an EML File, by Device
| Where you are | Option | What to expect | Install needed? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows / Mac / Linux | A desktop mail app (Outlook, Apple Mail, Thunderbird) | Gives the most faithful rendering if it supports .eml; check the app's help page for how to open a saved message | Yes, and it may need to be set as the default app for .eml |
| iPhone / iPad / Android | Built-in apps or a third-party app | Varies by phone and by installed apps | Possibly |
| Webmail | Your provider's own viewer | Support for .eml files varies by provider; check its help page | No, but needs an account |
| Any OS | Notepad / TextEdit | Shows the raw MIME source; plain text is readable, HTML and attachments are not | No |
| Any browser | This EML viewer | Decoded header, body, inline images and attachment list; the file stays on your device | No |
Desktop mail apps give the most faithful rendering, but you need the app installed and set up to open .eml files. Phones vary a lot, so the result depends on the phone and the apps on it. Webmail support differs by provider. Text editors show the source, which helps when you want to inspect raw headers but not for reading. The browser viewer is the no-install option. It works the same on a locked-down work PC and on a phone, and it opens .msg files too.
FAQ
What is an EML file?
An .eml file is a single email saved in the standard Internet Message Format. It contains the headers, the body and any attachments in one text file.
How do I open an EML file without Outlook?
Drop it into the browser viewer at the top of this page. You can also open it in a desktop mail app that supports .eml files; check the app's help page for how.
Is it safe to open an EML file?
Reading the text is low risk. Attachments and remote images are where the risk comes from. This viewer sanitizes the HTML, blocks remote images until you allow them, and lists attachments with their sizes without opening them.
Why does my EML file show code in Notepad?
Notepad shows the raw file. The body and subject are often base64 or quoted-printable encoded, and an email viewer is needed to decode them.
Can I open an EML file on my iPhone or Android phone?
Yes. Open this page in Safari or Chrome and choose the file from Files or your downloads folder. Files of tens of megabytes will be slow on a phone.
Can the viewer open Outlook .msg files?
Yes. .msg files open in the same way as .eml files. emltopdf.net is not affiliated with Microsoft or Outlook.
Can I save an EML file as a PDF?
Yes. Export from the viewer gives a PDF with selectable text and the header at the top. The EML to PDF converter page covers export options in detail.
